    Continuing from the old forum:

News from - and about - THAI AIRWAYS

THAI talks new jets with Airbus, Boeing

    Fifteen-plane order worth B35 billion.

A Boeing 777-200 is one of three choices being considered by THAI to restock its fleet.

Thai Airways International has begun talks with Airbus and Boeing to negotiate discounts and easier terms on orders for 15 high-capacity planes worth more than 35 billion baht.

THAI president Piyasvasti Amranand had separate discussions with top executives at the two aviation companies last week at the annual meeting of the International Air Transportation Association (IATA) in Berlin.

He declined to give details of the talks but indicated that the flag carrier’s decision on aircraft acquisition would depend largely on the attractiveness of the financial packages offered by the two planemakers.

Preliminary discussions have already taken place between lower-level managers at THAI and Airbus and Boeing, but the Berlin meetings saw negotiations take a higher level.

Talks will centre on the acquisition of eight long-haul and seven mediumrange jetliners with prompt delivery being a critical requirement.

The choices boil down to either Airbus’s A330/A340 serial models or Boeing’s B777-200 and the larger B777-300ER, said sources at THAI.

THAI is looking for medium-haul jets with a capacity of 300 passengers to serve regional routes. The long-haul planes, each capable of seating 350 passengers, will fly inter-continental flights.

Boeing’s B787 ‘‘Dreamliner’’ and Airbus’s A350 XWB are both newgeneration jetliners. But THAI ruled them out as they are both under development and will take too long to deliver.

A substantial backlog for the new planes, which meet with THAI’s requirements, means they are even less likely to meet THAI’s timeline to replace existing aircraft within the next three years.

THAI needs to retire 25 old aircraft, including several B747-400 jumbo jets now used on long-haul routes, from now until 2014.

Both Airbus’s A330/340 jets and Boeing’s B777s are already in production with more predictable manufacturing times than for the new machines.

Europe’s Airbus deliver the first A330/A340s to THAI in the second half of next year, a source said, adding that Boeing could match that offer.

As of the end of last month, Airbus had a backlog of 389 A330 models for future delivery.

As of April, there were orders for 1,144 B777s of all variants, with 860 delivered, with 284 yet to roll out.

The acquisition of the 15 jetliners form part of THAI’s overall plan to put some 70 new aircraft into its fleet over the next 15 years to replace ageing planes.

The 15 new jets are in addition THAI’s orders in recent years, including six A380 superjumbos and the five A330300s which are facing delays due to the supply of economy class seats from Japan’s Koito Industries.

The current catalogue price of an A330-300, a model at the top’s of THAI’s shopping list, is US$212.4 million, while the B777-300ER costs $257 million. Both planemakers normally offer discounts to airlines.

THAI has opted to lease the 15 aircraft rather than purchase them outright to reduce financial pressures on the airline.

I think Thai Airways has made a significant "boo-boo" in their latest inflight magazine, stating that this is the city of Bergen!

                    http://www.vg.no/reise/artikkel.php?artid=10099152

Additionally, the other image said to be from Bergen is actually from Oslo!...

Someone did not prrof read the article before it went to press... but in their defense, when you are on the other side of the earth, missing by 16 Norwegian miles ain't that bad... !

I little bit OT in this thread, but "Knuffingen Airport" is running now and they show also a wonderful Thai A380.
Enjoy some impressing minutes of a fully operating airport in scale 1:87:

                          Thanks Ralf,

That is an awesome piece of engineering: to put together something so intricate and at that kind of scale, with that kind of detail.

A sight to see: love the night time shots the most.
